ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 39th General Assembly
The delegation of the National Institute of Standards headed by the director Y. Azaryan on September 11-14, 2016, participated in ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 39th General Assembly held in Beijing, China. The Republic of Armenia was Correspondent member of ISO for 1994 – 1997 years and is a member body since 1997. The National Institute of Standards (SARM) now participates in the standardization activities of 65 technical committees and subcommittees and and in 3 Policy development committees: CASCO, DEVCO, COPOLCO. In 2014 SARM was elected as an ISO Council Member for the period 2015-2017.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which has 164 member bodies, is a voluntary, consensus-based world's largest developer of international standards and has developed more than 22000 standards for business, government and society.
On September 11, the director Y .Azarian participated in the 101th ISO Council Session. During the session was discussed the implementation of the strategic plan of the ISO 2016-2020, ISO Secretariat's annual budget, the issues of the ISO's regional strategy and the issues related to the election of a new Secretary General of ISO and appointment of a new DEVCO president, the reports of the ISO speakers and action plans for the next year, other strategic issues.
The 39th ISO GA slogan was “Standards Improve Global Connectivity”. This emphasizes the role of international standards as a compromise and a common language for communication without barriers at the global level. Group meetings were organized during the GA, the aim of which was to discuss the most important issues for international standardization. Selected topics were the following four:
1. The involvement of the government bodies,
2. The expected impact of the new higher international standards,
3. New standards for service sector,
4. The ISO management system.
The aim of these discussions was to identify opinion of the member bodies about the work performed by ISO and to consider all proposals for the improvement of ISO's activities.
During the 39th ISO GA ISO Financial and economic results of activities were submitted and approved, reports were presented by the Acting Secretary General of ISO, ISO President, ISO Vice-Presidents and Treasurer of the ISO.
In general, the 39th GA held in high performance and recorded a number of significant acquisitions that will further increase the ISO international role and will increase the efficiency of the standardization process.
On September 13, the new members of the Council were elected. New members of ISO Council are Malaysia, Ecuador and Croatia. The ISO new president was elected Mr. John Walter, head of Canada's national standardization body.
According to tradition, open session took place on September 14 at the Beijing People Building. During the open session were organized panel discussions with world famous and recognized experts as well as representatives of big international companies. They were dedicated to the following topics:
1. International standards supporting Trade and Development,
2. Safe and sustainable transport, implementation of standards,
3. Support of International standards to trade flows, communications and development of organizations.
After the panel discussion, the ISO participants welcomed by Prime Minister of China Mr. Li Keqiang, who emphasized the important role of standards for the development of economic infrastructures and safety of consumers and citizens.

The delegation of the National Institute of Standards headed by director Yenok Azaryan participated in the annual traditional events of ISO held in Berlin, Germany, on September 18-22, 2017, hosted by the German Institute of Standardization (DIN). By the way, the week of ISO took place in Berlin because it was celebrated the 100th anniversary of the foundation of DIN.
